Consisting of correspondence and receipts. Receipt, 15 Dec. 1854, from M.O.W. Simpson for the purchase of George, an African American slave, by J[oh]n Fleming; letter, 27 June 1861, "[with]in 25 miles of... Washington [D.C.]," re military strategy, and anticipation of battle, "a fight is inevitable... Davis is opposed to firing first - our picketts are in speaking distance..." Letter, 8 May 1862, Clinton, S.C., from D.T. [Carpenter?] to Mr. L. Fleming, re payment of taxes on an unidentified female slave woman; receipt, 6 Apr. 1863, "Elihu Watson, Esq., Tax Collector, pay to Mrs. Edmund Adair, seventy dollars out of the funds collected for the poor of Laurens Dist[rict]..." signed by Tho[mas] F. Jones; Affidavit, 15 July 1863, Laurens, S.C., certifying J.O.C. Fleming as ineligible for military service due to a gun shot wound to his right leg, signed by B.F. Kilgore; and tax-in-kind receipt, 3 Apr. 1865, Laurens, S.C., of Samuel Fleming, for pork and bacon conscripted for the Confederate Army, signed by R.P. Moth.
